Pallet Jack Training FAQs
Does OSHA require pallet jack certification training?
Although you might not think of an electric pallet jack as a truck, OSHA classifies the tool as a Class III forklift under 29 CFR 1910.178 — Powered Industrial Trucks. Therefore, to comply with federal law, anyone who uses a motorized pallet jack for their job needs to complete training that satisfies OSHA requirements. OSHA does not require manual pallet jack operators to be certified.
Who needs a pallet jack certification?
If your job requires you to operate a motorized pallet jack, OSHA standards mandate that you must complete formal instruction, practical training and a performance evaluation to get certified. You must also be at least 18 years old to operate a motorized pallet jack.
Our Pallet Jack Training and Certification course is designed for warehouse employees and other workers who operate electric or manual pallet jacks. Certification is not required to operate a manual pallet jack. While this course covers manual pallet jack safety, the OSHA standard only applies to powered industrial trucks.
How does the Pallet Jack Training and Certification course work?
According to OSHA standard 1910.178, warehouse employees and other workers who operate motorized pallet jacks must complete certification training. To become certified, you need to complete formal instruction, practical training and a performance evaluation.
With our online Pallet Jack Training and Certification course, you can finish the formal instruction requirement at your own pace from any device. After finishing the two-hour course, you can instantly print your Certificate of Completion. Expect your wallet-sized pallet jack certification card to arrive in the mail within 5-7 business days.
Upon course completion, you can download a Powered Industrial Truck Operator Evaluation Form to print. Your employer may provide additional training on the specific types of pallet jacks used on the jobsite and brief you on site-specific hazards. To become officially certified, you will need to pass an employer-led evaluation based on the requirements of the provided evaluation form.
Do I need to take a test?
Yes, to complete your online training, you must pass six module quizzes and a final exam. The quizzes include up to five questions and require a score of at least 80% to pass. Quizzes are designed to help you retain information, so they have no time limit and include unlimited attempts.
The final exam contains 20 questions that cover topics from the entire course. You need a score of at least 70% to pass. If you don't pass, you can retake the exam until you pass without having to purchase the course again.
Will my pallet jack certification be accepted nationwide?
Yes. After completing our two-hour pallet jack training course and an employer-led demonstration and operator evaluation, you will receive a certificate and plastic certification card that is accepted in every state. Certification is valid for three years.
How long will my pallet jack certification last? Is retraining required?
Your certification will remain valid for three years. Before your current certification expires, you will need to take another employer-led operator evaluation in order to maintain your pallet jack certification. OSHA Education Center recommends all electric pallet jack operators complete retraining every three years.
OSHA regulations require mandatory refresher training if you:
- Are observed operating a pallet jack in an unsafe manner
- Cause a pallet jack accident
- Experience a near-miss accident involving a pallet jack
- Complete an evaluation that determines you are not operating a pallet jack safely
- Are assigned to a new type of pallet jack you are not trained to operate
- Need additional training for new workplace conditions that affect the safe operation of pallet jacks
