SST 8-Hour Worker Refresher for SST Card Renewals

$.

New York City requires construction and demolition workers at most major building sites to hold a Site Safety Training (SST) Card under NYC Local Law 196 of 2017. SST cards expire every five years and must be renewed to remain valid.

To earn a new card, workers must complete eight hours of DOB-approved refresher training. This package contains all the training courses workers need to renew an SST card 100% online.

What Is Included in This Package?

This SST refresher package includes everything workers need to renew a current DOB-issued Site Safety Training card.

It consists of two four-hour safety courses and a new SST card issued by the New York City Department of Buildings.

The NYC SST 8-Hour Worker Refresher Training Package Includes:

Who Needs to Complete an SST Worker Card Refresher Program?

Workers and supervisors on most large NYC building sites must hold a valid SST card to enter the premises. SST cards are issued by the NYC DOB and expire five years after the date of issuance.

Workers must complete an 8-hour refresher training program before their cards expire to remain current. Supervisors must complete a 16-hour program.

Approved courses may be completed up to one year before the current card's expiration date.

Am I Eligible for an SST Refresher Card?

To qualify for an SST Refresher card, you must have completed initial SST training with an approved provider who uploaded your card to the DOB's Training Connect system. Unfortunately, some training providers will not upload your card. If your card is not in the system, we can't issue a refresher card after you complete your training.

You can use the free Training Connect smartphone app to find out if your original SST card is in the system. To check your card status:

  1. Download the app called Training Connect by myComply on App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android).
  2. Open the app and allow camera access.
  3. Scan the QR code on your SST card.
  4. If your card appears as valid, you are eligible for a refresher card.

If the app says “Invalid SST card,” your original provider likely did not upload your card to Training Connect. To address this issue, contact your original SST card provider and ask them to upload your card to the NYC Department of Buildings' Training Connect system. If they do not upload it, you must retake the original SST training rather than the refresher version.

All SST cards issued by OSHA Education Center are fully compliant and uploaded to Training Connect. If you have questions about your card's status or don't have a QR code to scan, please check with your original training provider or contact us before enrolling in our refresher course.

How Often Do I Need to Refresh My SST Card?

Workers must refresh their SST cards every five years by completing DOB-approved Site Safety Training. If your first card was issued in 2019, for example, you must renew in 2024, 2029, 2034, etc.

You may repeat the same refresher training courses each time you renew.

Can I Apply Previously Completed Training Toward My SST Card Renewal?

Yes. If you have completed some of your refresher training with another DOB-approved SST trainer, you can upload your certificate of completion, proof of address and other verification documents to be credited for your work.

How Do I Get My SST Card Updated?

We will help you renew your card through a simple process.

Once you complete all lessons and pass the final exam for each course, you just need to upload a few documents — including pictures of your current SST card.

You will receive your renewed official SST card in the mail shortly after you finish the submission process. The card will have a new issue date and expiration date.

Can I Choose Other Training Courses to Renew My SST Card?

No. The curriculum and program requirements are set by NYC Local Law 196. The DOB offers two approved course tracks for workers. Those course programs include either:

  • 4-Hour Fall Prevention
  • 4-Hour Supported Scaffold User & Refresher

OR

  • 4-Hour Fall Prevention
  • 2-Hour Toolbox Talks
  • 2-Hour Pre-Task Safety Meeting
